Lektro Aircraft Tug Lithium Upgrade FAQ

Q: Will your LiFePO4 battery pack fit directly into my Lektro tug without cutting or chassis modifications?

A: Yes. Our lithium battery packs are engineered to match the exact battery compartment dimensions of all Lektro models, from the AP83 and AP86 series up to the heavy duty AP88 and AP89 series. They feature a true plug and play drop in design using original mounting points and standard industrial connectors without requiring any chassis alterations.

Q: Can your lithium battery handle high peak current demands when starting under heavy load or pulling up a ramp incline?

A: Absolutely. Towbarless tugs experience extreme peak current draws when raising the aircraft nose gear or accelerating from a standstill with heavy aircraft like a Gulfstream G650 or Boeing 737. Our packs utilize high rate power cells and a heavy duty industrial BMS that support continuous discharge up to 2C, which equals 600A to 800A, and instantaneous peak discharge up to 3C to 4C, which equals 1200A or more for 10 to 15 seconds. This prevents BMS tripping, power cut offs, or voltage sag during maximum torque operations.

Q: Is your Battery Management System fully compatible with Lektro original motor controllers and dashboard?

A: Yes. Our intelligent BMS supports CANbus and RS485 communication protocols preconfigured for Curtis, GE, and EVT motor controllers used across Lektro AP87, AP88, and AP89 models. It seamlessly feeds real time State of Charge, voltage metrics, and diagnostic alerts directly to your original instrument panel.

Q: How does your lithium battery perform in extreme cold during winter ramp operations?

A: Unlike lead acid batteries that lose up to 50 percent capacity in freezing temperatures, our batteries feature an integrated PTC automatic self heating system. Utilizing charger or battery power, the system automatically warms the cells to optimal operating temperature, delivering 100 percent torque and range down to minus 30 degrees Celsius, which equals minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit.

Q: Can we opportunity charge the battery during short flight intervals at the FBO?

A: Yes. Our LiFePO4 chemistry supports 1C to 2C fast charging, allowing a full charge in 1 to 1.5 hours, or a quick 20 minute top up during crew breaks. This eliminates 8 hour lead acid cooling cycles and battery swaps, enabling continuous 24/7 multi shift operations.

Q: Are these lithium batteries safe to operate around multi million dollar aircraft and inside hangars?

A: Safety is our highest priority. We use ultra stable LiFePO4 chemistry cells inherently resistant to thermal runaway. Each pack is certified to UN38.3, UL2580, and CE standards, featuring active thermal protection, IP67 waterproof sealing, and zero acid gas emissions, making it 100 percent safe for indoor hangar operations.

Q: What is the expected Return on Investment when converting a Lektro fleet to lithium?

A: Most FBOs and ground handlers reach full ROI within 14 to 18 months. By eliminating lead acid maintenance including watering, acid cleanup, and equalization, cutting charging energy loss by 30 percent, and extending battery lifespan to over 10 years or 8000 deep cycles, operational costs drop by over 60 percent annually.

Q: Do I need to overhaul our existing airfield charging infrastructure to use your batteries?

A: Not necessarily. While we offer matched high efficiency LiFePO4 fast chargers for maximum charge speed, our BMS can also interface with existing industrial CC CV chargers. We supply complete plug and play packages including prewired AC and DC connectors matched to your airfield power setup.

Q: How long does it take to swap out an old lead acid battery for your lithium pack?

A: A standard conversion takes less than 2 hours per tug. Because our battery packs are preconfigured to Lektro exact voltage of 36V, 48V, 72V, or 80V and tray footprint, your maintenance crew simply lifts out the old lead acid unit, drops in our pack, connects the primary power harness, and puts the tug straight back into service.

Q: What warranty and technical support do you provide for ground support equipment operators?

A: We back all GSE lithium packs with a standard 5 Year or 10000 Hour commercial warranty and a 15 year design life. We provide remote CANbus diagnostics, spare parts availability, and dedicated technical engineers to assist your fleet maintenance team whenever needed.
