Best Tugs Aircraft Tug Lithium Upgrade FAQ

Q1: Will this LiFePO4 battery fit directly into my Best Tugs battery tray without modifications?

  • A: Yes. Our batteries are engineered with 1:1 OEM Drop-in dimensions matching standard BCI Group U1, UB12180, Group 22NF, and Group 31 footprints. They utilize the same terminal locations and M6/M8 thread specs as your factory AGM batteries, allowing a seamless 10-minute installation without altering internal brackets or wiring harness.

Q2: Can I use my original Best Tugs charger, or do I need a dedicated lithium charger?

  • A: Our integrated Smart BMS accepts the charging profiles of standard Best Tugs Smart Chargers. However, to achieve 100% full capacity and maximum charging speed (0.5C–1C fast charging), we recommend using a LiFePO4-compatible multi-stage charger.

Q3: Best Tugs pull heavy aircraft and experience sudden resistance over door tracks or wheel chocks. Can your BMS handle high peak surge currents?

  • A: Absolutely. Universal drag-and-pull applications create intense high-current surges when over-rolling chocks or starting movement. Our custom Heavy-Duty BMS supports a continuous discharge rate of 2C and short-time peak surges up to 5C (3–5 seconds), ensuring your tug never shuts down mid-tow due to over-current protection.

Q4: How does this battery perform in freezing airport hangars during winter?

  • A: Standard lead-acid batteries lose up to 50% capacity in freezing conditions, while standard lithium batteries cannot charge below 32°F (0°C). Our batteries feature an optional Automatic Self-Heating BMS. When plugged into a charger under freezing temperatures, the system draws power to heat the cell core to 41°F (5°C) before initiating charging, guaranteeing full power year-round down to -4°F (-20°C).

Q5: How many 12V modules do I need to buy for my specific Best Tugs model?

  • A: It depends on your tug’s system voltage.

    • 24V systems (Alpha / Bravo B5-B12 / Romeo R5-R12): Require 2× 12.8V modules in series (or 1x 24V module).

    • 36V systems (Echo E12-E18 / PAPA Pad): Require 3× 12.8V modules in series (or 1x 36V module).

    • 48V / 72V systems (Sierra S50-S99): Require 4× or 6× modules in series. Our BMS supports up to 4S/2P or 6S series connections without voltage imbalance.

Q6: What is the lifespan difference between this lithium battery and the original AGM lead-acid battery?

  • A: Factory AGM batteries usually last 300–500 cycles (approx. 1–2 years under regular FBO usage) and suffer from steep capacity degradation if left uncharged. Our Grade-A LiFePO4 cells provide 8,000+ deep discharge cycles at 80% DOD (10–15 years of service life), drastically reducing your fleet maintenance cost and downtime.

Q7: Will replacing my Best Tugs lead-acid battery with lithium affect the tug's center of gravity or traction?

  • A: Our LiFePO4 batteries are approximately 60% lighter than equivalent lead-acid batteries. While this lightweight feature makes handling and installation much easier, Best Tugs rely on aircraft nose-wheel downward pressure for primary traction (Load-On mechanism). The reduced overall deadweight actually increases runtime and motor efficiency without sacrificing tow grip.

Q8: How does self-discharge compare if I leave my tug unused in the hangar for weeks?

  • A: AGM batteries self-discharge at 5%–10% per month and can suffer permanent damage if voltage drops too low. Our LiFePO4 battery has an ultra-low self-discharge rate of <2% per month. You can leave your Best Tugs parked for 3–6 months during off-seasons and still have immediate towing power upon startup.

Q9: Does this battery provide constant power while towing heavy twin-engine or turbine aircraft?

  • A: Yes. Unlike lead-acid batteries whose voltage drops steadily during discharge (causing motor sluggishness), LiFePO4 maintains a flat voltage curve above 12.8V/25.6V/38.4V until 95% of its capacity is depleted. Your Best Tugs will deliver 100% full torque from the first tow of the day to the last.

Q10: What safety certifications and warranties do you provide for aviation/FBO ground equipment?

  • A: All our LiFePO4 packs are built with thermal-stable Lithium Iron Phosphate chemistry (inherently non-combustible and non-thermal runaway). Cells are certified under UN38.3, CE, and UL1973. We provide a 5-Year (up to 10years) Commercial Replacement Warranty, giving FBO managers and aircraft owners total peace of mind.
