Airtug Aircraft Tug Lithium Upgrade FAQ

Q1: Will these LiFePO4 modules fit into Airtug battery compartments without chassis or bracket modifications?

A: Yes. Our replacement packs are manufactured inside heavy-duty powder-coated steel enclosures engineered to match original BCI Group U1 and GC2 footprints. Equipped with factory-compatible quick-connect plugs, they drop directly into Model 6, Model 10, EL3, SL, TT-HD, and Dragger series compartments for 100% plug-and-play installation.

Q2: Will high current surges during initial movement or clamping trip the BMS on smaller Airtug units like Model 6 or EL3?

A: No. Overcoming initial aircraft static friction creates sharp peak amperage draw. Our specialized BMS features a heavy-duty power stage supporting continuous peak discharge rates over 3C–4C, preventing sudden voltage dropouts or nuisance trips when pulling 10,000 to 50,000 lb aircraft.

Q3: Since lithium is lighter than lead-acid, will reduced weight cause drive-wheel slippage on Airtug walk-behind units?

A: We integrate internal steel counterweight ballast plates directly inside the battery enclosure. This maintains the essential ground-pressing force required by Airtug walk-behind and nose-dragger units for maximum drive-tire traction on wet, icy, or slanted hangar ramps.

Q4: Can Airtug units equipped with these lithium batteries operate in unheated hangars during harsh winters?

A: Absolutely. Every pack comes with an integrated automated PTC self-heating system. When temperatures drop below freezing (down to -20°C / -4°F), the BMS uses charger power to pre-warm the internal LiFePO4 cells to optimal operational temperatures before accepting high-rate fast charging or high-current output.

Q5: How fast can an Airtug electric tug be recharged between aircraft movements during busy FBO hours?

A: Lead-acid batteries require 8–10 hours of charging plus cooling time. Our LiFePO4 chemistry supports 1C fast charging, reaching a full 0% to 100% charge in about 60 minutes. FBO crews can opportunity-charge during short breaks without battery memory effect or degradation.

Q6: Does the battery pack integrate with Airtug throttle controllers and charge indicators?

A: Yes. The BMS features integrated communication interfaces compatible with standard industrial drive controllers, transmitting accurate real-time State of Charge (SOC), system voltage, and diagnostic status directly to the dash readout or remote interface.

Q7: What safety certifications protect these lithium packs when operating near high-value aircraft in private hangars?

A: Safety is non-negotiable. Our complete battery units are fully certified under UN38.3, UL2580, and CE standards. They feature IP67-rated weather sealing, active cell balancing, and multi-tier thermal runaway protection.

Q8: How do I select the right lithium conversion kit across the expanded Airtug lineup?

A: Simply provide your Airtug model designation (Model 6, Model 10, EL3, SL-5, SL-8, TT-HD, or Dragger) and system operating voltage (24V or 48V). Our engineering team will match your exact tray size, harness type, and capacity requirement.

Q9: What is the ROI timeline when converting an Airtug fleet from lead-acid to LiFePO4?

A: Eliminating battery watering, acid leak corrosion, and frequent battery replacements yields a complete ROI within 12 to 18 months. Our LiFePO4 cells deliver over 8,000 full charge cycles—6 to 7 times the operational lifespan of conventional lead-acid units.

Q10: Can we replace multiple 12V lead-acid batteries wired in series with a single integrated LiFePO4 pack?

A: Yes. Instead of wiring multiple 12V lead-acid batteries in series, our turnkey conversion kit provides a single 24V or 48V integrated steel box pack, simplifying wiring, eliminating cell imbalance, and reducing failure points.
